The Rev. James Manning (recent guest) on Obama

WAIM first went on the air in April of 1935, and was Anderson's first radio station. For many years, during the "Golden Age" of radio, WAIM was a CBS Radio affiliate. The station was founded by Wilton E. Hall, The publisher of the Anderson Independent/Daily Mail. From 1934 to 1938 he was chairman of the South Carolina Planning Board and was appointed, on November 20, 1944, to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Ellison D. Smith and served from November 20, 1944, to January 3, 1945. He was also founder of television station WAIM-TV in 1953 and owner of radio stations WAIM-AM and WCAC-FM, and was publisher of Quote Magazine.

The call letters WAIM stood for the Anderson Independent Mail. For many years the studios/offices were located behind Anderson College (Now Anderson University) on Kinglsey Road.

Wilton E. Hall resided in Anderson, and died at the age of 80 in 1980.

The stations were sold in 1978, with the FM and TV stations moving to Greenville, SC in the 1980's. WAIM 1230 was purchased by Palmetto Broadcasting in 1991, and has been serving as Anderson's premiere news/talk station ever since.

In recent years the station has been undergoing a series of technical renovations and upgrades, and is working toward the future to continue serving our community.
